Tesla to update software in 8,700 vehicles in China to prevent accidents

Tesla Inc will update the software in 8,700 vehicles in China to reduce the risk of accidents, according to the country’s market regulator. The software update will affect 1,071 imported Model S and Model X and 7,629 China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, the State Administration for Market Regulation said on Friday.

The update will address the issue of misuse of the Autosteer function, which is part of Tesla’s Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system. The regulator said some drivers may activate the Autosteer function without paying enough attention to the road conditions, which could lead to collisions.

Tesla will release an over-the-air software update for the affected vehicles, which means the owners do not need to visit a service center to get the fix. The update will install alerts to remind the drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and monitor the driving environment when using the Autosteer function.

This is not the first time Tesla has issued a software update to address safety concerns in China, its second-largest market after the United States. In January, Tesla updated the software in more than 1.6 million vehicles in China to fix a potential issue with the suspension system. In December, Tesla recalled about 870 vehicles in China to replace faulty touchscreens.
