SAAHAS: A Pioneer in Sustainable Waste Management Solutions

SAAHAS: A Vision for Zero Waste India – India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, but also one of the largest generators of waste. According to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board, India generates about 63 million tonnes of waste annually, of which only 43% is collected and 11.9% is treated. The rest is dumped in landfills, open spaces, or water bodies, causing environmental pollution, health hazards, and social problems.

Ecowrap: A Startup That Makes Waste Management Smarter and Greener

To address this challenge, SAAHAS, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2013 by Wilma Rodrigues, a former journalist and environmental activist. SAAHAS, which means courage in Hindi, is an organization that is dedicated to promote waste management and resource recovery at the source, based on the principles of circular economy. SAAHAS believes that when waste is managed at the source, it becomes a resource that can be reused, recycled, or composted, and achieve 90% resource recovery.

What SAAHAS Does?

SAAHAS provides end-to-end waste management solutions for bulk waste generators, such as corporate parks, universities, residential complexes, and more. SAAHAS also provides awareness and capacity building programs for various stakeholders, such as citizens, students, government officials, and waste workers. SAAHAS also conducts research and consultancy projects on waste management and related topics. SAAHAS operates in Bangalore, Delhi, and Goa, and has impacted over 2.5 lakh people and diverted over 32,000 tonnes of waste from landfills.

Some of the key programs and initiatives of SAAHAS are:

  • Back2Earth: This is a program that provides decentralized waste management services to bulk waste generators, such as corporate parks, universities, residential complexes, and more. Back2Earth helps them segregate their waste at source into wet, dry, and sanitary waste, and process them accordingly. Wet waste is converted into compost or biogas, dry waste is sent for recycling, and sanitary waste is sent for incineration. Back2Earth also helps them reduce their waste generation and disposal costs, and comply with the waste management rules and regulations.
  • Aviral: This is an initiative that aims to reduce plastic waste in the Ganga river basin, in partnership with the National Mission for Clean Ganga. Aviral works with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to create awareness, collect, and recycle plastic waste along the river banks. Aviral also promotes alternative livelihoods for the waste workers, such as making eco-friendly products from plastic waste.
  • bE-Responsible: This is a program that provides e-waste management services to bulk waste generators, such as corporate parks, universities, residential complexes, and more. bE-Responsible helps them collect, segregate, and transport their e-waste to authorized recyclers, and ensure data security and environmental compliance. bE-Responsible also helps them create awareness and adopt best practices for e-waste management.
